There are three types of Search and Rescue. Search and Rescue specialty branch for K-9 etc. trained dogs, Specific Duty Search and Rescue which deals with one certain Search and Rescue branch as a job such as Earthquake Rescue and the standard RtH which consists of all training methods for all types of RtH operations which is the trainee's soul line of duty. Where the first two types follow the same training procedure thus resulting in three types but two training programs that obviously change according to RtH branch. The reason for this is that RtH is performed in a different manner for different operations. As an example an Avalanche Dog will quickly and efficiently zigzag snow and find the person or people in need and will dig and pull at their clothing on reaching them. Whereas an RtH operation after an earthquake will involve no digging and must not involve pulling at cloths. A fully trained RtH dog will learn both techniques along with many others in a long training period whereas a branch dog will learn one or the other but not both else will not be sufficient. Fully trained RtH dogs are known as RtH workers. Training starts as a puppy and continues until the puppy is an adult of 36 months of age. Training continues throughout the dog's active working life. These dogs hold all search and Rescue branches and act according to the RtH operation involved with, at that specific moment of time. RtH branch dogs are trained for a specific RtH type only and specialize in the area. However specialized does not mean that they are better then RtH working dogs in that area but are where possible their equal. Preferred candidates are well socialized good sniffers, extremely good at hearing, friendly and outgoing, ability to work under stress, enjoy working and good with humans. |
